Mary E. Williams, 83 years old, in the swimming pool of St Mary's recreation center in the Bronx, New York City, USA, on April 12th, 2022. Mary learned to swim when she retired, 22 years ago. "When I was young, we didn't have any place to swim as Black people, she said. Boys would wander around, go to the river and sometimes one would just disappear. It's important to learn to swim because it's also a survival skill! It matters to me that we have a place to swim now. I can't live without water. I started swimming because my doctor said I needed a knee replacement more than 20 years ago. To this day I've never done this surgery. I even put the cane down! I love being the water. I can do more things in the water that I can do on land."

gezogen. Seit ihre
Männer verstorben
sind, ist ihre Freundschaft
noch intensiver
geworden. Jeden
Sonntag treffen
sie sich, um Lambrusco
zu trinken und
sich gegenseitig zu
helfen, wann immer
sie können.
