In Land of the Free

Questo lavoro documenta uomini, donne e bambini detenuti in 16 stati americani, esplorando non il crimine commesso, ma l’umanità dietro ogni individuo. Ogni ritratto è accompagnato dal primo ricordo del soggetto, raccontato attraverso le sue parole e rifiutando di definirlo attraverso le sue azioni peggiori. Il progetto pone una domanda semplice ma potente: cosa perdiamo quando spingiamo le persone ai margini, e cosa rimane quando le riduciamo ai soli errori commessi?

Fondata nel 1971, la missione della New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) è quella di sostenere artisti di tutte le discipline e operatori culturali affinché possano raggiungere il successo secondo i propri termini, fornendo risorse, opportunità e supporto critico. NYFA immagina un mondo in cui gli artisti prosperino nella pratica e nell’espressione del loro lavoro creativo. Il suo operato si articola in quattro programmi principali: formazione, premi e borse di studio, supporto fiscale e risorse online, raggiungendo circa 1 milione di destinatari ogni anno.

This work documents incarcerated men, women, and children across 16 US states, exploring not crime but the humanity beneath it. Each portrait is paired with the subject’s earliest memory — in their own words — refusing to define them by their worst actions. The project asks a simple but powerful question: what do we lose when we cast people to the margins, and what remains when we choose to look at the whole of a life?
