The Second First Flight

In Corvo, the smallest of the Azores, the community fights light pollution to protect wildlife. Since 1991, the SOS Cagarros project has safeguarded Cory ’s shearwaters by switching off public lighting for five nights each autumn. Residents rescue disoriented young birds, ensuring their safe journey to the ocean. This initiative demonstrates how reducing artificial light can restore ecological balance and strengthen the bond between humans and nature.
