Nothing but Courage

Only 9% of refugees have access to higher education, far below the global average of 42%. These are refugee students and alumni in Chad, Egypt, Malawi, Mexico, Rwanda, Slovakia, South Africa and Zambia who overcome all the bleak figures, boundaries and labels to take control of their lives and achieve success on their own terms. These are stories of those who are translating their hardships into motivation. Ultimately, these are stories of resilience and self-realization in the face of adversity.

UNHCR – the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – is the world’s leading organization dedicated to saving lives and protecting the rights of millions of refugees, displaced persons, and stateless people. It operates in 135 countries, serving over 80 million people. Its mandate is to lead and coordinate refugee protection globally, ensuring the right to asylum and safe reception.

Antoine Tardy is a Geneva-based documentary photographer whose work has taken him across some of the most remote and complex corners of the world. Rooted in a background in social sciences and professional experience in branding and communications, Tardy brings to each assignment a rare combination of visual rigour and narrative intelligence.

He works locally, nationally and internationally for clients such as UN agencies, NGOs, foundations and more. Since February 2017, he has documented the higher education journeys of over 300 students and alumni in 16 countries around the world, for UNHCR.

He is a member of the Swiss Association of Professional Photographers and of Photographers for Hope, and was nominated for the 2019 Prix Pictet, the global award in photography and sustainability.
His solo exhibitions have been presented at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, UNESCO in Paris, the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation in Berlin, among others.
