Durante la Guerra Fredda, la regione del Semey in Kazakistan divenne l’epicentro dei test nucleari sovietici. Dal 1947 al 1991 oltre 456 test nucleari sono stati condotti al Poligono nucleare di Semipalatinsk esponendo così migliaia di persone alle radiazioni. Il regime sovietico nascose le conseguenze, lasciando la popolazione locale con severe problematiche di salute. Anche se il sito ha chiuso nel 1991, i livelli di inquinamento radioattivo rimangono tutt’ora alti e i residenti continuano a lottare per avere giustizia e ottenere risarcimenti per i danni duraturi inflitti alla loro terra e alle loro vite.
During the Cold War, Kazakhstan’s Semey region became the epicenter of Soviet nuclear testing. From 1947 to 1991, over 456 nuclear tests took place at the Semipalatinsk Test Site (Polygon), exposing thousands to radiation. The Soviet regime hid the consequences, leaving locals with severe health issues. Though the site shut down in 1991, its toxic legacy remains. Residents still fight for justice and compensation for the lasting damage inflicted on their land and lives.
