THE LIVES OF OTHERSPer Kristian Aale
Life Behind the New Iron Curtain

This project explores daily life in Russia in the wake of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, observing the deep changes that have reshaped society and people’s lives in a country that is becoming increasingly isolated, defined by growing militarization and heavy political and social pressure. With an attentive eye that resists simplification, the project depicts people, gestures, and routines, revealing how a war without popular consent has become woven into an everyday life that is difficult to rebel against.

With a journalistic career spanning over two decades, Per Kristian Aale has been deeply engaged in conveying stories through words and images. His journey began in 2001 as a staff journalist and photographer for the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. He has had several roles within the newspaper, including serving as a correspondent in Moscow on multiple occasions. This role allowed him to delve deeper into Russian culture and society, and he has endeavoured to portray this through his camera and pen.
He also served as a Brussels correspondent, traveling all over Europe creating reports, further developing his skills as a photographer and journalist.
At times, he has been based in the Oslo newsroom where he was able to engage in investigative journalism, and for a few years, he held the position of editor. This experience has been highly beneficial in developing his photographic eye as he evaluated the work of others.
Over the last few years, he’s once again been working as a Moscow correspondent for Aftenposten, which has provided him the opportunity to extensively explore documentary photography and visual storytelling.
