Diego Fedele is an Italian freelance photojournalist based in Munich, working as a stringer for Getty Images with additional wire assignments for Bloomberg and EPA. Since 2022 he has reported independently from the war in Ukraine, arranging his own access and logistics.

In the Shadow of a Deadly Sky, his most important and ongoing project, takes a humanist approach, focusing on intimate moments that reveal individual dignity. The work received the Walkley Award for Feature Photography in 2024 – Australia’s most prestigious journalism prize – the Spotlight Award at Fotografia Etica in 2025, and an Award of Excellence in the Professional category of the Alexia Foundation grant in 2026.

Diego trained in documentary photography at WSP Photography in Rome and began his career in Australia working for AAP and Newswire, with his news images distributed across the country’s major newspapers and globally. His feature work has appeared in The Guardian Australia, including a months-long story following a Kurdish man in the months after his release from eight years in Australia’s offshore immigration detention system. He has also worked with NGOs including Emergency. He was selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop in 2022 and the VII Foundation’s Foundry Workshop in 2026, has completed RedR’s Hostile Environment Awareness Training, and holds membership with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
