Fates in Changing Times: Testimonies from the LGBT+ Community in Georgia

Per molti anni la Georgia ha guardato all’Occidente ed è stata sul punto di avviare il processo per entrare a far parte dell’Unione Europea quando sono stati approvati alcuni progetti di legge filo russi, tra cui la legge anti-LGBT che mina alla base i diritti umani. Le Nazioni Unite avvertono che questa norma potrebbe incoraggiare atteggiamenti di odio, portare a un incremento di atti di violenza e rafforzare le stigmatizzazioni fino al punto che le persone della comunità LGBT si sentiranno costrette a lasciare il Paese per poter essere ciò che sono.

Georgia has long been oriented towards the West and was undergoing an EU application process when new pro-Russian bills, including an anti-LGBT law that undermines basic human rights, were passed. The UN warns that this law could encourage hate speech, lead to more incidents of violence and reinforce stigmatization. Ultimately, many from the LGBT community may have to move abroad to be who they want to be.
